Once Again, Speaker Carl Heastie Fails on Climate Action

Climate Activists Resolve to Unseat Legislators Unwilling to Tackle Fossil Fuels

As the New York legislative session comes to a close, the Assembly has once again failed to pass the major climate legislation needed to meet the state’s aggressive climate emissions reductions mandates. Key climate/clean energy bills that went unpassed include the All Electric Building Act and the Build Public Renewables Act. In response, New York’s climate movement recommitted to working to unseat fossil fuel-friendly legislators in the June primaries. Food & Water Action released the following statement:

“For the third year in row, Speaker Heastie is leaving town without delivering on climate change. His failure to bring critical climate and clean energy legislation to the floor is unconscionable,” said Alex Beauchamp, Northeast Region Director at Food & Water Action. “New Yorkers fighting to move the state off fossil fuels are now left with only one choice:  Working to boot fossil fuel-friendly legislators out of office. Food & Water Action, along with countless other well-meaning organizations, is resolved to activating our members and volunteers to vote the bums out later this month. Since this Assembly is unwilling to adequately address the climate crisis, we need a new one.”
