National environmental group Food & Water Action is endorsing San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan in the contested race for California’s 11th Congressional District. 

Chan has been a progressive leader while serving as a San Francisco Supervisor. She’s played a role in shutting down polluting power plants, and helped create a fund to respond to Trump’s cuts to the federal safety net. 

One of the defining issues in the race has been artificial intelligence and the massive data center infrastructure buildout associated with it. Supervisor Chan supports a national moratorium on data centers. Her opponent, State Senator Scott Wiener, is being supported by Public First, the superPAC launched by AI corporation Anthropic. The PAC has committed to spending $500,000 in support of Wiener. Wiener also hamfistedly released an AI chatbot that responded to queries as though it were Chan. Among other egregious outputs, the chatbot channeled Chan in saying “I’m afraid my San Francisco accent is so thick I can barely understand myself.”
