National Environmental Groups Endorse Summer Lee’s Reelection

Rep. Lee has championed climate justice initiatives

Categories

A group of national environmental advocacy organizations is endorsing Rep. Summer Lee’s (PA-12) reelection campaign. Food & Water Action, Oil Change U.S., Center for Biological Diversity Action, and Zero Hour spoke out in support of Rep. Lee ahead of a primary opponent.

Throughout her political career, Rep. Lee has been a strong voice for climate action, working to keep fracking wells out of Allegheny County, and pushing to get off fossil fuels nationally. She is one of the only members of Congress with fracking in their district to call for a ban on the environmentally destructive form of drilling.

Lee faces a corporate- and Republican-funded opponent who has shown no political leadership or vision, consistently aligning herself with the powerful at the expense of working people and the environment.

Food & Water Action Political Director Sam Bernhardt said:

“We’ve made a lot of progress cleaning up Allegheny County’s water and air in the past years, and some of those victories have been driven by the job that Summer Lee has done advocating for environmental and climate justice. There’s still a lot of work to be done in the fight for environmental justice. We know we can win if we send Summer Lee back to Congress.”

Oil Change U.S. Political Director Collin Rees said:

“Rep. Summer Lee is an incredible champion for bold climate and environmental justice who prioritizes the needs of working people over polluters. Her dedication to standing up to deadly big-money interests — from the oil and gas industry to the military industrial complex — makes her one of the best members of Congress and a crucial voice for democracy. We are proud to support Rep. Lee’s campaign for Pennsylvania’s 12th District.”

Center for Biological Diversity Action Northeast Political Director Stephanie Kurose said:

“Summer Lee has proven she is willing to stand up to big polluters and fight for a cleaner, safer world for us all. We need more progressive champions like Summer in Congress. We’re very proud to endorse her.”

Zero Hour Executive Director Zanagee Artis said:

“Summer Lee is a champion for environmental justice and has always fought for communities most impacted by pollution. Pennsylvania’s 12th district deserves an advocate like Summer Lee who will stand up to the fossil fuel industry. She is an ally to the youth and we are proud to endorse her for re-election.”

The Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund is a national nonprofit organization that advocates for legislation and legislators that will advance a progressive environmental agenda. The Action Fund is the 501(c)(4) affiliate of the Center for Biological Diversity, but these organizations’ names are not interchangeable. This news release is from the Center for Biological Diversity Action Fund, not the Center for Biological Diversity.

Food & Water Action, the political and lobbying arm of the national advocacy group Food & Water Watch, mobilizes people to build political power to move bold and uncompromised solutions to the most pressing food, water and climate problems of our time. We work to protect people’s health, communities and democracy from the growing destructive power of the most powerful economic interests.

Oil Change U.S. is dedicated to supporting real climate leadership, exposing the true costs of fossil fuels, and building a just, equitable, and renewable energy future in the United States. We work to demand political candidates and elected officials reject fossil fuel money, end fossil fuel subsidies, oppose new pipelines and other fossil fuel infrastructure, and support a just transition and a Green New Deal.

Zero Hour is a youth-led movement creating entry points, training, and resources for new young activists and organizers (and adults who support our vision) wanting to take concrete action around climate change. Together, we are a movement of unstoppable youth organizing to protect our rights and access to the natural resources and a clean, safe, and healthy environment that will ensure a livable future where we not just survive, but flourish. Not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee.
