Trump’s threat to our democracy, including redistricting schemes, continues to grow. But our opportunity to take back the House remains strong.

Trump has proven himself to be one of the biggest threats to our planet and our democracy. At Food & Water Action, we’re clear-eyed about the political reality we face. From Trump’s promoting more fossil fuels, to rolling back funding to protect our food and water, to kicking off a redistricting race to the bottom to secure more seats for his party, we know the stakes are higher than ever. But we also see a clear path to placing a crucial check on Trump’s power — winning back the House this November.

Electing a Democratic majority to the House of Representatives is not only crucial — it’s right within our grasp. Democrats need to net just three seats. Food & Water Action has identified five swing districts where our organizing on the ground will make a huge difference (Iowa’s 1st, Iowa’s 3rd, New York’s 17th, Pennsylvania’s 7th, and California’s 22nd Congressional Districts). We have the relationships and people power in these districts to flip these seats, and that’s exactly what we plan to do.

Trump and Republicans Are Playing Dirty Because They’re Unpopular

Since returning to office, Trump has made unprecedented moves to undermine our democracy

Last year, he instructed the Texas state legislature to redraw the maps of the state’s Congressional districts with the explicit goal of adding five Republicans seats in Congress. This set off a redistricting arms race, in which the California, Florida, and Virginia legislatures passed new maps in efforts to change the balance of Democratic and Republican seats.

In April 2026, the conservative justices of the Supreme Court — three of whom are Trump appointees — issued a ruling in Louisiana v. Callais that gutted the Voting Rights Act. The ruling opened the doors for redistricting efforts that will ultimately favor Republicans. And Trump has urged Republican-led Southern states to do just that.

Already, several Republican legislatures, including in Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi, have kicked off special sessions to eliminate “majority-minority” districts. For example, Tennessee lawmakers dismantled a majority-Black Memphis district currently represented by a Democrat. All told, redistricting efforts from the past year may result in up to ten additional Republican seats.

But redistricting isn’t fate. The truth is, Republicans are only doing this because they know they’re unpopular. They know that without these redistricting schemes, they would get utterly trounced in the midterms. But even with these dirty tactics, hope is not lost for the Democrats and for our democracy.

Odds Still Strong for Dems, Even After Republican Gerrymandering

Even after all the redistricting, we’re seeing 18 toss-up races in these midterms. The Democrats need to win just 13 of those toss-ups to take back the House. These odds are far from impossible, especially since the Republicans are so deeply unpopular across the country.

Under Trump’s second term, they’ve slashed essential food and healthcare support, enabled Trump’s senseless war that has driven up the cost of living, and rolled back protections for food, water, and the climate. In national polls on party preference in Congressional races, Democrats are up anywhere from 2 to 13%.

In battleground races like Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional District, the Democrat is already pulling ahead of the Republican. More troublingly for Republicans, districts where experts previously thought Republicans were safe are turning out to be anything but. In New York’s 21st, where Trump won by 20% in 2024, the latest polling is showing a true toss-up. Moreover, Trump’s approval ratings are at an all-time low, as low as 33%.

Historically, the incumbent party has lost House seats in every midterm election over the last 20 years. And across the country, people are hitting the streets and going door to door in support of Democrats and climate champions.

With You, We’ll Take Back the House!

In Food & Water Action’s five priority districts, we have organizers and volunteers on the ground getting out the vote. Each of these races is winnable.

For example, in Iowa’s 1st District, Republican Rep. Marionette Miller-Meeks won her previous race against Democrat Christine Bohannan by just a couple hundred votes in 2024. Miller-Meeks also lost in a head-to-head poll with Bohannan last year and had just a 31% approval rating.

For the past several years, Food & Water Action has worked with community members in IA-01 to defend clean water and public health against Big Ag. Our members have held Miller-Meeks accountable for terrible votes in Congress and pushed state politics to put Iowans over Big Ag. Now, we’re seizing the opportunity to flip this seat.

Already, voters nationwide are supporting candidates who support people over corporate greed. In Pennsylvania’s 3rd Congressional District, Democratic voters advanced Chris Rabb, a progressive champion and long-time Food & Water Action ally, to the general election. In California’s 22nd District, our endorsed candidate Randy Villegas defeated a moderate Democrat in his primary, and he’ll take on one of the last California Republican representatives in the House.

As the cost of living soars, Big Tech’s AI data centers threaten to swallow our communities, and we face intertwined environmental, political, and economic crises, voters are demanding change from the status quo. Food & Water Action is harnessing that energy and turning it into real results at the polls.

With you, we can turn the tide against Trump and his cronies in Congress. We can connect with voters and show how their voices matter more than ever. We can take back the House and put a real check on Trump’s abuses of power. And we can protect our food, water, climate, communities, and democracy.

Your generosity powers our work! A gift of $20 will fund four hours of calls to voters and train four volunteers.
